Global and Area Thematic Initiatives (GATI)
http://isp.msu.edu/gati/
GATI provides funding to MSU faculty to develop thematically focused, multi-disciplinary interest groups that will pursue innovative curricular and research activities related to the current dynamics of globalization. GATI supports the start up and consolidation of such groups in order to expand MSU's prominence in international studies. GATI encourages the integration of junior faculty members’ involvement in research teams when possible. Groups must show clear potential for evolving beyond GATI funded activities in the long run. Started in 1998, GATI has drawn faculty and students from a broad array of disciplines and colleges, including many individuals who have not traditionally held international research interests. GATI has funded groups working on topics as diverse as Water Security; Land Use; Ethics and Development; Globalization and Visual Culture; Aging and Eldercare in Rich and Poor Countries; Social Capital; International Markets, Trade, and Equity; and Feminist Perspectives on Globalizing Women's Studies. Individuals from nine MSU colleges have been involved in 40 interest groups so far.

(David D.) Horner International Student Scholarship Fund
http://isp.msu.edu/funding/horner.htm
The purpose of the Horner Fund is to provide emergency Scholarship assistance to students in financial distress and to further the University's interest in obtaining the educational benefits derived from a racially and ethnically diverse student body. The scholarships are made without expectation of repayment. The situations that cause a student to apply for an emergency scholarship are broad-ranging and might be anything from loss of housing to family health issues to unbudgeted academic costs. The characteristics of these situations however, are unanticipated by the student, not of the student's creation and are a threat to the student's ability to remain at MSU. The scholarship will be used as a tool to retain international students whose participation in the classroom and presence on campus foster a varied educational experience that helps all students learn and prepares them for an increasingly diverse society.
