Subject: "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) for CFRnet

*****PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE******

This is the most recent edition of our list of "Frequently Asked Questions"
(FAQs) for CFRnet. We revise and update this list from time to time and
resend it. Save this message and refer to it when you have questions about
CFRnet. If you have any suggestions for additions to our FAQ by sending a
message to .

Q. What is CFRnet's stated purpose?
A. CFRnet is an on-line discussion group focused on building partnerships
between educational institutions and corporations and foundations. Topics
of discussion include solicitation strategies, stewardship programs,
proposal writing, prospect tracking, gift-in-kind programs, corporate
giving, issues related to student recruitment by companies, and other
topics.

Q. Anything else I should know right from the start about CFRnet?
A. Yes. CFRnet is not a list for discussion of individual donor relations,
alumni relations, prospect research, administration, or general
fund-raising topics. For information on other lists that deal with related
topics, see below under the question "Are there other fund raising
discussions lists out there?"

CFRnet's reply function is automatically set to send your response to ALL
of our subscribers. This minimizes the number of private discussions on
topics of interest to the whole group. It also results in the occassional
broadcast of personal messages to all subscribers.

You are encouraged to reply directly to individual senders on topics that
are unrelated to the list purpose, even if those topics were raised before
the whole group. This is especially important if the topic is both
unrelated and controversial.

The CFRnet is intended to serve the majority of our subscribers for our
expressed purpose (corporate and foundation support for education). Help us
retain as many of our talented subscribers as we can by refraining from
discussion of issues unrelated to our purpose that could unnecessarily
divide the group. Your colleagues will appreciate your cooperation.

The CFRNet list manager is:

Patricia Gregory

Q. How do I unsubscribe from CFRnet?
A. Send the message to .
Remember to leave the subject line blank and leave off the <>.

Q. My email address has changed since I first subscribed to CFRnet. How do
I unsubscribe my old email aaddress from CFRnet so I don't get two copies
of every message?
A. Special instructions apply if your email address is changing: Be sure to
unsubscribe from CFRnet before the change takes effect, then re-subscribe
from your new email address. The unsubscribe message must be sent from your
old email address. Otherwise, the server will reject it, since your new
email address will not be recognized as a current subscriber.

If you already have your new email address, and can no longer send messages
from the old address, the CFRnet list manager will have to unsubscribe your
old address manually from the server. (This is important to do because the
list can get cluttered with dead email addresses, causing subscribers to be
deluged with error messages every time a message is sent to CFRnet.) Just
send an email message to cfrnet-mgr@medicine.wustl.edu asking that your old
email address be taken off the list. If you are concerned that you may miss
messages while you are unsubscribing and re-subscribing, you can check the
archives of CFRnet on the following web site to see what was posted during
that period: http://www.pacificgroup.com/html/cfrnet.htm

Q. How do I post a message to CFRnet subscribers?
A. Send your message to .

Q. How do I sign my name to a message posted to the group?
A. It is standard practice to include your name and institutional
affiliation at the end of all messages posted to CFRnet. It is a courtesy
to list subscribers to let them know to whom they may be responding. Many
subscribers use a signature line that is automatically attached to all
their email messages, sometimes including an address and phone number.

Q. Can I receive my messages in a bundled or DIGEST format? If so, how?
A. Yes. To set DIGEST, send the message to
. Remember to leave the subject line blank. To
return to receiving messages one at a time, send the message to . Remember to leave the subject
line blank, and don't put a period at the end of your message.

Q. If I have a problem or question about CFRnet, who do I contact?
A. You can contact the list manager at cfrnet-mgr@medicine.wustl.edu,
rather than posting a message to all CFRnet subscribers.

Q. How do you subscribe to CFRnet?
A. Tell them to send the message to
. Remember to tell them to leave the subject
line blank and leave off any signature line they normally attach to their
messages.

Q. Does CFRnet maintain an archive of past messages?
A. Yes. You can receive a list of files in the archive by sending the
message to . Once you've
determined which file you want, send the message .
The archives are stored daily and the files are cataloged by date. There is
also a web site on which you can search CFRNet archives. The address is:
      http://www.pacificgroup.com/html/cmonth.html

Q. I notice that sometimes people post a question to the list, but ask for
personal responses to be sent directly to them. Is that okay?

A. Such requests appear occasionally. When people ask for private responses
to posted questions, they are almost invariably followed by requests that
the replies be posted to the whole list, or a series of "me, too" messages.
The whole point of having a list like CFRnet is to share information. In
exchange for the privilege of using a public list to get information, you
accept the responsibility of having the replies made public, too. There is
one exception to this rule. If you are conducting a survey, it makes sense
to ask for private replies. However, if you use the list to conduct a
survey, subscribers will expect you to summarize the replies your receive
for the benefit of the whole list. If you really need to have a question
answered privately, you might consider following the list for a while to
identify a particular subscriber who specializes in the subject. Then
e-mail that person privately.

Q. Sometimes people respond to a question by offering to share written
materials. If they look interesting, can I ask that they be faxed to me,
too?

A. We try to post as much "on line" as possible. With 600 of us, even a few
percent of us can create a major burden for the sender who is expected to
fax a document to all interested parties. Whenever possible, the documents
should be posted to the list or placed on a web site.

Q. Can I use the reply feature to respond to a message?
A. Yes. However, the reply feature is set to send your response to the
entire group of CFRnet subscribers. IF YOU WANT TO SEND A RESPONSE DIRECTLY
TO THE SENDER, YOU'LL NEED TO CHANGE THE ADDRESS.

Q. There seem to be a lot of personal messages on this list. Why are people
posting these messages to all of us?
A. The reply feature for CFRnet is set to send your response to the entire
subscribers list. Since many people don't realize this, or forget now and
then, we do get messages occassionally that were meant for individual
subscribers only. The list manager sometimes communicates with subscribers
directly to inform or remind them of our default reply setting. If this
becomes a problem, we could return to the orginal reply setting, but that
usually generates complaints that important information is not being shared
with the whole group.

Q. If someone's response to CFRnet really upsets me, how can I let them
know that I found their posting offensive without further distracting the
list subscribers? It really makes me want to rally the CFRnet troops to
denounce the offender publicly.
A. Try sending an email message directly to the sender or give the person a
call. If you send such a message to the entire group, it may start a
tangential discussion about the offender, which will distract us from our
purpose. Whenever this happens, we lose subscribers who tire of in-boxes
cluttered with mail not related to the purpose for which they subscribed.
Help us keep our colleagues on the list by directing messages
appropriately.

Q. Sometimes when I read a post I realize there's a kindred soul on CFRNet
who feels as passionately as I do about a particular cause. When I reply to
the whole group, it starts a heated debate that I am unable to stop once
people get going.
A. Again, this is a problem of our default reply setting. Often, people
don't intend to get the group going (or maybe they DO intend to, but we
wish they wouldn't because all of us don't share the same views and will
unsubscribe if we disagree with the vocal minority's views.) Remember what
we all want from this list. Let's do what we can to keep it focused on
corporate and foundation support for education so we'll have access to the
maximum number of knowledgeable folks in CFR.

Q. Can I advertise my company's products on CFRnet? It is an easy way for
me to reach my target market.
A. Advertising is not permitted on this list. The list is a discussion
group for people involved in securing corporate and foundation support for
education.

Q. What if I'm looking for leads on jobs in a particular geographic area?
A. Subscribers often post job openings in their institutions to the list.
You could simply post your question to the list and see what is offered.

Q. Are there other fund raising discussions lists out there? I'm just not
getting what I need from CFRnet.
A. Yes. You might explore one of the following related discussion groups:

Q. If I know I'm going to be out of the office for an extended period of
time and don't want to receive CFRnet messages while I'm gone, do I have to
unsubscribe?
A. No. You can set a feature called POSTPONE. To do so, send the message
 to . Remember to
leave the subject line blank. To resume receiving messages again, send the
message to . Remember to
leave the subject line blank. If you normally receive your messages in
DIGEST format, send the message to
.

Q. How do I find out what options are available for the CFRNet list?
A. Send the message to for a full list
of commands the server will accept.

Q. I've read all the instructions and I'm following them to the letter, but
it really frustrates me when I see others on the list who are not following
these rules. Can't the list manager control this?

A. Subscribing to a listserv requires patience. Messages are distributed by
a computer "server", not the list manager. The list manager maintains the
technical aspects of the list (such as purging problem email addresses and
notifying subscribers to contact their network administrators) but it is
the subscribers that set the rules by which the list agrees to abide.
Occasionally, the list manager will post a reminder of our purpose,
especially if subscribers email the list manager privately with such a
request. It is helpful to remember that our list is dynamic; subscribers
come and go regularly, and may not know all the rules on the first day. We
want to give a warm welcome to newcomers and to those who may not be
computer wizards. If we fail to show understanding and tolerance for human
error, such subscribers will be reluctant to post questions and the list
will miss out on stimulating discussions.

Help the list manager by submitting your suggested additions to this list
and keeping this handy for later reference.
