In our travels around the country, Dr. Lloyd Foerster (our Higher Education Specialist) and I have observed many common problems facing our church-related nonprofit clients. Some of these include 1) over dependence on single funding streams like the government or denominational funders; 2) lack of effective visibility to the funding community; 3) lack of long-term fund raising strategies; and 4) the lack of a fund raising board of directors. In our consultations and workshops, we often recommend resources to help our clients deal with these crucial issues facing nonprofits. This article on Nonprofit Board Resources is the first in a series of articles in which we will share the resources we recommend to our clients. Upcoming articles will feature Resources for Diversifying Your Funding Base, Effective PR Resources, and Development Planning Resources. ERC recommends the following resources for strengthening your board of directors:
A Guide to Building Your Board: Six Keys to Recruiting, Orienting, and Involving Nonprofit Board Members, Judith Grummond Nelson, National Center for Nonprofit Boards, 200 L St., NW #411, Washington, DC 20036. (20) 452-6262.
Board Member Manual, Aspen Publishers, 7201 McKinney Circle, Frederick, MD 21701. (800) 638-8437. (The most practical resource tool on the market!)
Board Fund Raising Manual, Aspen Publishers, see #2.
The Raising of Money: Thirty-five Essentials Every Trustee Should Know, James Gregory Lord, Third Sector Press, P.O. Box 18044, Cleveland, OH 44118. (My personal favorite!!)
