THE FUND RAISING PROSPECTUS
by Ronald J. Meshanko, President, ERC
The prospectus is the major fund raising tool used in presenting our case to a donor prospect in a face-to-face interview. It is a very brief and concise outline of the project you would like funded that answers the qustions: who, what, why, where, when, and how much? The goal of the interview is to determine (1) if the prospect is interested in the project, and, if so (2) determine how much you should request in the funding proposal, and (3) determine how to present the funding request (proposal format, supporting documentaiton, etc.).
- The WHO section presents the agency mission statement.
- The WHAT section describes the project you would like funded.
- The WHY section tells the reader why the project is needed and/or describes the prolbem to which the project is a solution..
- The WHERE section states the location of the project.
- The WHEN section is a brief project time-line, including beginning and completion dates, or maybe just office hours.
- The HOW MUCH section presents the project budget. It might also state how much money has been raised for the project. The prospectus should always end with this statement: "The XYZ nonprofit would like to submit a proposal to the ABC foundation (corporation, church, etc.) in support of this project."
The prospectus is usually the only piece of paper that you will need to present to the prospect during the interview. It is a one-page, double-spaced document printed on letterhead. Hopefully, you will leave the interview knowing how much you should request in the funding proposal - which you will prepare for the funder according to the funder's specifications after the interview.
