The Grand Rapids Foundation
The Start of a Legacy

If he were alive today, no doubt Lee M. Hurchins, founder of The Grand Rapids Foundation would be astounded at the results of a simple, yet effective idea and decades of commitment and effort. In 1922, it looked good in theory, but would it really work? Today, we can attest to the power of a legacy.

In 1922, Grand Rapids business owner Lee M. Hutchins approached S. George Graves, president of the Grand Rapids Association of Commerce, for the first contribution to The Grand Rapids Foundation. Hutchins had nothing to offer in return except a promise that in time the concept would pay off.

The concept was simple. The community could set up a permanent charitable endowment and use the income generated from the account to meet current needs in a variety of different areas.

In a proposal to community leaders, Hutchins pointed out the importance of having such a vehicle: "Those who have lived and found happiness and prosperity in any degree in Grand Rapids and have the desire, whether their wealth by large or small, to return some portion of it to be used perpetually for the moral, physical and mental welfare of the city and its people, should be offered a safe and permanent medium through which their desires may e be realized."

Now, as we celebrate our 75th anniversary, those words still ring true. The Grand Rapids Foundation is a community foundation -- created, sustained, and energized by those who seize opportunities today to secure the health and vitality of this community tomorrow. Through their foundation, its members can build powerful legacies of caring.

Help us prepare for the next 75 years of caring for community needs in the greater Grand Rapids area. Call (616) 454-1751 for more information on ways you can support The Grand Rapids Foundation.
