Michigan Gateway Community Foundation is dedicated to creating strong, vital, and caring communities in Berrien and Cass Counties. In 1978, the Buchanan Area Foundation was created by a group of visionary civic leaders. Over the years, the Foundation began to provide a way for donors to create permanent gifts to the community to implement their own vision to improve community life. In 1996, the Foundation began a partnership with community leaders in Niles to serve the greater Niles area, requiring a name change to Michigan Gateway Community Foundation. In 1997, Cass County became part of this successful partnership. In the past five years, the Foundation has almost doubled in its size and in its grantmaking.

The Peshtigo Area Foundation was established by a group of Peshtigo citizens involved in the Peshtigo Economic Development Partnership Inc., (PEDPI) which felt that the Peshtigo area needed its own fund within the Foundation. Established in 2006, the Peshtigo Area Foundation was created for the purpose of assisting and promoting charitable activities in the Peshtigo Area. The advisory board is responsible for reviewing grant applications, growing the fund and recommending awards to those community organizations and programs that are making a difference in the Peshtigo Area. In the last year, the Peshtigo Area Foundation has grown from $25,000 in assets to nearly $56,000. This growth was spurred by a $10,000 matching grant program sponsored by Tim & Debbie Rennes. Since the Foundation began awarding grants in 2007, $2,200 has been awarded to 6 different non-profit organizations in Peshtigo. The Foundation recently established its first two scholarship funds, the Michael and Annetta Tonn Family Scholarship Fund and the Bulldog Alumni Fund. The Grantsmanship Center
Community Foundations in Michigan
Community Foundations are nonprofit, tax-exempt, publicly-supported grantmaking organizations. These foundations are public charities, since they develop broad support from many unrelated donors with a wide range of charitable interests in a specific community. A community foundation has an independent board that is broadly representative of the public interest and it maintains a diverse grants program that is not limited in scope. In addition to making grants, these foundations often play a leadership role in their communities, serve as a resource for grant information and broker training and technical assistance for local nonprofits.
