Alt-PressWatch (Proquest) : Full-text database of selected newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press. Coverage complements the reporting in the mainstream press.
Ethnic NewsWatch (Proquest) : The Ethnic NewsWatch database provides the full text of ethnic and minority newspapers, magazines, and journals in the United States. Coverage varies by paper, but goes as far back as 1960 for some publications.
Factiva : Factiva provides electronic access to hundreds of newspapers from around the U.S. and the world, most of them within one day of publication. Retrospective coverage varies but in some cases goes back to the 1980s. Special feature : Click on News Pages, then United States, for same day articles from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post, but not the Chicago Tribune or Los Angeles Times. Or click on News Pages, then United States Academic for the same three newspapers, plus the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and San Francisco Chronicle. Or choose on of the many other options including topics such as agriculture/forestry, automobiles, energy, health care, etc. or by location such as European Union, Greater China, Russia, United Kingdom, etc. Note : 6 MSU users at a time.

NewspaperDirect PressDisplay (Proquest) : PressDisplay provides online, same-day access to more than 1000 newspapers from 82 countries in 39 languages. Includes a searchable, 60-day archive. Limit: 5 MSU users at a time.
Universal Database of Russian Newspapers : This resource contains full-text articles from more than 60 Russian newspapers in English and Russian. Issues are updated daily. Articles are fully searchable, and many newspaper archives go back to 1996. Argumenty i Fakty and Izvestiia go back to 1980.
World News Connection : World News Connection is an online news service compiled by the U.S. Government (FBIS) from many non-U.S. media sources. Information covers current socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events. Material is available 24 to 72 hours after original broadcast or publication. Note: Works best with Mozilla Firefox.
Michigan Newspapers via Newsbank : This database provides electronic access to two daily Michigan newspapers: the Detroit News and the Grand Rapids Press.
Michigan Newspapers via Lexis Nexis Academic : Lexis Nexis Academic recently announced (January 2008) the inclusion of the following Michigan newspapers :
- Ann Arbor News : Covering all of Washtenaw County and parts of Livingston, Lenawee and Wayne Counties. Our weekly news section focuses on stories and events in and around our local communities. Published every weekday evening, Saturday and Sunday mornings, holiday mornings. Coverage : Dec. 1, 2006 to date. Updating schedule: within 2 weeks.
- Bay City Times : The Bay City Times, at 33,000 daily and 42,000 Sunday circulation, is the largest paper to cover a 12-county area of Northeast Michigan that is a haven to sportsmen, tourists and retirees. The Times sets the standard for coverage of northern lifestyles, personalities and events, and is the reigning Associated Press sweepstakes winner for its investigative reporting of public affairs. Coverage : Dec. 1, 2006 to date. Updating schedule : Within 4 days; Saturday and Sunday received by Thursday.
- Flint Journal : The Flint Journal is the only major newspaper in Flint, Michigan. It serves Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties. The Journal is published every weekday evening; Saturday, Sunday and holiday mornings. Daily circulation of 83,814 and a Sunday circulation of 101,590. Coverage : Dec. 2, 2006 to date. Updating schedule: Same day.
- Grand Rapids Press : The Grand Rapids Press has a daily circulation of 140,000 homes daily and more than 190,000 homes on Sundays. The Press is published every weekday evening; Saturday, Sunday and holiday mornings. At the hub of West Michigan, The Press serves all of Kent and Ottawa counties, and is distributed in 28 additional counties. Coverage : Dec. 1, 2006 to date. Updating schedule : Within 1 week.
- Kalamazoo Gazette : Kalamazoo Gazette remains the dominate news and information medium for reaching readers and shoppers in Southwest Michigan. On sale and delivered across six counties, the Gazette provides national, regional and local news to over 200,000 readers each week. Coverage : Dec. 6, 2006 to date. Updating schedule : Same day; Sunday by Tuesday.
- Muskegon Chronicle : The Muskegon Chronicle is a daily newspaper in Muskegon, Michigan owned by Booth newspapers. It started publication in the early to mid 1800's. It is an afternoon paper Monday through Friday. It is a morning paper on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. On Sunday, it is called the Sunday Chronicle. "Sunday" replaces "Muskegon" on the masthead. It is the largest paper of the week. It started publication in 1970. Because of common ownership with the Grand Rapids Press, the Chronicle's coverage and distribution focuses on Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, and Ottawa County north of the Grand River, while the Press focuses on Kent, Ottawa (south of the Grand River) and Allegan counties. These two papers often publish each other's stories. Coverage : May 4, 2006 to date. Updating schedule : within 3 weeks.
- Saginaw News : The Saginaw News is a publication serving the Saginaw, Michigan area. The Saginaw News has a circulation close to 50,000 per day. Coverage : Dec. 1, 2006 to date. Updating schedule : within 1 day.
- Crain's Detroit News. Coverage : Updating schedule : weekly; usually on Monday. Coverage: July 26, 1993 to date.

AP Images :
Also called Associated Press Multimedia Archive. Includes an ever-changing collection of over 700,000 photographs from the AP news service. Most of the images are contemporary and date from 1995 forwards, but many historical images are also included. All images include descriptive captions and source information.
Life Photo Archive Hosted by Google : Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google. Heh, it may not be from a newspaper but it compliments the AP Images collection.

Historical Electronic Newspapers
New York Times (1851-2005) (rolling embargo date) : A unique resource for primary source documents. The New York Times, long known for providing 'All the News That is Fit to Print' has set the standard for quality journalism since 1851. This respected source provides news and viewpoints from the United States and around the world. Newspapers offer a glimpse into the opinions, biases and prejudices, and knowledge of a certain time or author. Educators can use the articles and images contained in The New York Times to help teach skills such as critical thinking, historical interpretation and context, writing and composition, and information literacy; can supplement lessons in many different disciplines; and can offer multidisciplinary approaches to subjects. Students gain a better understanding and appreciation of the past through sources that illustrate historical information via a relevant medium still used today. The variety of information spanning more than 150 years found in The New York Times provides resources applicable to the study of the Arts, Business, Communications and Media, Economics, Geography, Government, Health, History, Language Arts, Science, Technology, and more.
Chicago Defender (1905-1975) : "The Defender was the leading African American news publication before World War I, focusing on issues significant to its audience, including covering the abandonment of the segregated South for work in the more industrialized North, reporting on the 1919 Red Summer Riots, and editorializing for antilynching legislation." 19th Century African Newspapers via Accessible Archives : This enormous collection of African - American Newspapers contains a wealth of information about the cultural life and history during the 1800s, and is rich with first-hand reports of the major events and issues of the day, including the Mexican War, Presidential and congressional addresses, Congressional abstracts, business and commodity markets, the humanities, world travel and religion. The featured newspapers also contain large numbers of early biographies, vital statistics, essays and editorials, poetry and prose, and advertisements all of which embody the African-American experience. Starting with the Freedom`s Journal in 1827 and continuing in chronological order with the addition of 10 to 12 million words of new text each year (downloaded monthly), this database will ultimately contain the complete text of the major African-American newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century. Never before has such important original source material - written by African- Americans for African-Americans - been readily available for research and fresh interpretation by historians, sociologists, educators and students. Featured newspapers include: Freedom's Journal, The Colored American (Weekly Advocate), The North Star, The National Era, Provincial Freeman, Frederick Douglass Paper, The Christian Recorder.
19th Century U.S. Newspapers via Gale : This database is composed of approximately 500 U.S. newspapers, published between 1800 and 1900. It includes titles from throughout the United States, including many published in what were, at the time, only territories. The publisher selected newspapers on their immediate value to researchers on the press and on the century in general. They also selected papers for their value for undergraduate and graduate students. The publisher made certain that the papers selected covered a broad spectrum, with a comprehensive geographical and chronological range. Full-text searching allows users to search across the entire database for the specific term/subject/person/event they are looking for. Moreover, searches can be restricted by categories (such as, Advertising, Business News, Images, Editorials, etc.), by states & cities, and by date of publication. Finally, the publisher has commissioned a number of scholarly essays on topics and events such as the Confederacy, fires & firefighting, immigration, and elections.
Chronicling America : Historic American Newspapers (1900-1910) : Chronicling America allows you to search and read newspaper pages from 1900-1910 and find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Over a period of approximately 20 years, NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 from all U.S. states and territories. At present only newspapers from California, District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, and Virginia are available full text.
Google News Archive Search :
According to Google, "we are partnering with newspaper publishers and aggregators to capture a wide variety of newspaper archival content, covering a number of time periods, regions and perspectives. Many of the pages in these newspaper archives were unavailable online previously, and are now easily discoverable in Google News results. Content is full-text and is constantly being added." Warning: access to some content requires a fee. Also Google News does not provide the ability to download or print articles. Remember that the MSU Library provides free access to newspapers via online subscriptions and microfilm. However since there are very few indexes to our newspapers on microfilm, this service may prove a substitute.
Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective via Accessible Archives : This database contains the full text of major articles gleaned from over 2,500 issues of The New York Herald, The Charleston Mercury and the Richmond Enquirer, published between November 1, 1860 and April 15, 1865. The text begins with the events preceding the outbreak of war at Fort Sumter, continues through the surrender at Appomattox, and concludes with the assassination and funeral of Abraham Lincoln. Included are descriptive news articles, eye-witness accounts and official reports of battles and events, editorials, advertisements and biographies. A great effort has been made also to include articles which describe other than military concerns of the day. These include such topics as travel, arts and leisure, geographical descriptions, sports and sporting, social events, etc.
17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers : A full-text, fully searchable digital archive of nearly 1,270 newspapers and news pamphlets from the United Kingdom. Collected by the Reverend Charles Burney, this unique collection represents the largest single archive of 17th and 18th century news media available from the British Library. Sample newspapers include : British Journal, Daily Courant, Daily Gazetteer, Daily Post, Evening Post, General Advertiser,
Lloyd's Evening Post and British Chronicle, London Chronicle, London Evening Post, London Gazette, Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser, St. James' Chronicle or, British Evening Post, Whitehall Evening Post, or London Intelligencer, and
hundreds of others
19th Century British Library Newspapers via Gale : Provides researchers with the most comprehensive collection of national and regional newspapers of Victorian Britain available. This full-text, fully searchable digital archive includes 50 papers originating in England, Scotland and Ireland, carefully selected by an editorial board from the British Library and providing a broad yet detailed view of British life in the 19th century. The collection is made up of daily and weekly publications and reflects Britain's growing role as a superpower in the 19th century world. Sample papers include :

Times Digital Archive (1785 - 1985) : Another unique resources for primary documents. Researchers can search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London), using keyword searching and hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements, and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching. If you need access to the Times of London after 1985, try the Periodicals Reading Room Newspaper Microfilm Collection.
Australian Newspapers (1803 - 1954) : The National Library of Australia has launched a public beta of its ‘Australian Newspapers’ site. The site will offer access to scanned images and text from historic Australian newspapers dating from 1803 to 1954. Long term project.
Historical U.S. Newspapers on Microfilm
Some are shelved by title in the Newspapers on Microfilm section of the Copy Center; others are shelved by accession numbers on regular shelving units. The Library of Michigan also has an extensive collection of historical Michigan newspapers on microfilm which can be requested through interlibrary loan.
Breaking news : Proquest has just released a new product -- Proquest Digital Microfilm -- which makes a digital version of its microfilm available for remote users. The MSU community and other subscribers can take a look at the latest year of the Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post online. Unfortunately key word searching is not available. Try it out and let us know what you think about it.

The African-American Press Collection |
From the Christian recorder, published in Philadelphia in the 1850s, to the Chicago Defender, still very much alive, the African-American press has provided first person coverage of the concerns, interests and achievements of African-Americans throughout the United States. The Center has a “critical mass” of over two hundred titles. |
Civilian Conservation Corps Newspapers, 1933-1942 Database |
Several thousand newspapers and newsletters published by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps document one of the most successful New Deal work relief efforts of the Great Depression. These publications were produced in the rural and urban CCC camps and record the experiences of American youth who worked on important nature conservation and urban infrastructure projects during the period. |

Thousands of volumes of newspapers were produced in the U.S. by ethnic communities from the Civil War to the late 20th century.
