(1) Volunteer and/or Share Information

The Government Documents Round Table of Michigan was formed in October 1978 as an organization through which government documents librarians and those interested in government documents/information could connect, learn from each other, share information and work together to share government documents and government information with the public. Since January 1979, RED TAPE has served as the official newsletter of the Government Documents Round Table of Michigan, to help share information and create a bond among those interested in government information.

Would you consider sharing a small portion of your time and expertise by either serving as an officer in GODORT of Michigan or by sharing news items or summaries of trip reports to RED TAPE as a way to give back to that community of librarians and others who are interested in government information? Perhaps by doing so, you will derive some measure of personal satisfaction, the recognition of your peers, a place in the history of the government documents community of Michigan, as well as increasing your own knowledge and professional competence.

Special thanks to all of those who have served as officers in the past or who have contributed information to RED TAPE.

(2) Godort of Michigan Seeking Officers

If you want to continue sharing, learning, eating, and having fun as a documents community, then we are in need of members to run for the following offices:

For more information about each office, see Godort of Michigan Manual of Duties.

Please volunteer or send nominations to Shawn Nicholson by April 22, 2005, so that a ballot can go out prior to the Spring meeting.

In addition our current Program Chair Michael Samson would appreciate receiving program ideas for the spring meeting.

(3) Proposed Bylaws Change Regarding Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award

In response to a suggestion made at the Fall 2004 meeting, Shawn Nicholson has proposed the following change to our bylaws regarding our Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award. It was suggested that perhaps we should consider expanding the scope of the Boyles Award to to encourage more participation by our membership in our leadership positions.

Existing language:

Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award
The Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award, named in honor of Ms. Eleanor Boyles, may be presented to a GODORT of Michigan member in support of professional development activities related to government documents librarianship. Up to two awards may be offered during any given GODORT of Michigan membership year. The same person may not receive the award twice in any three year span.

Proposed language:

Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award
The Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award, named in honor of Ms. Eleanor Boyles, shall be presented to the President Elect/Program Chair in the summer following their election. The Award is to support professional development activities related to government document librarianship. The amount stipulated in the Manual of Duties shall be subject to regular review at intervals not to exceed five years.

Rationale:

This is a change in form not necessarily intent. The change to an automatic award for the President Elect/Program Chair away from an open competition is an effort to encourage participation and promote the general welfare of the organization. Award specifications will require the recipient to report back to the membership during the award year.

Note: Current Eleanor Boyles Professional Development Award information available on the Godort of Michigan Web Page.
