(1) Senate Bill 936 Sent to Governor

Senate Bill 936, which requires that a library offering public internet access *adopt and require enforcement of a policy* to prohibit minors from viewing sexually explicit material harmful to minors received concurrence by the Senate of the House-passed version today. The bill will be forwarded to the Governor, who is expected to sign it. The law will have an October 1, 2000 effective date.

The bill, which amends the Library Privacy Act, specifies the library will restrict internet access by minors *by utilizing a system or method designed to prevent a minor from viewing obscene or sexually explicit matter which is harmful to a minor*.

The Michigan Library Association in cooperation with the Library of Michigan will offer an informational session to aid librarians and library trustees with complying with the law. Specific details of the session will be announced within the next week.
