Collection Division Goals and Objectives 2016-2017
I. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Provide a collection of information resources that will support
the teaching and research needs of the university community as part of a worldwide community of scholars.
- Select materials needed by faculty and students for research and study in all formats, including both new and retrospective content, and using both firm orders and approval plans.
- Work within a climate of budget awareness, assessment, and sound stewardship.
- Review serials and monographs to identify high-use items for access in Main, low-use items for paged access from Remote, and no-use items to deaccession.
- Deaccession serial backfiles where we can rely on electronic access.
- Participate in transfer of materials from Main to Remote, from floor to floor in Main, and from branches.
- Use SCS Greenglass software to assess collection use.
- Be aware of accessibility factors in collection building.
- Be aware of the Rovi collection as a factor in selection of DVDs and CDs.
- Work with the Development Officer to set a high standard before accepting gifts.
II. SERVICE TO USERS
Goal: Provide instructional services and personal assistance to aid
library users in identifying, locating, and using resources.
- Provide public service through reference operations, BIs, appointments, liaison and
contacts outside the library.
- Accurately and completely report off-the-desk reference statistics using
- Support efforts to create more space for users in the Main Library, through
relying on digital formats, and by transferring low-use volumes to Remote.
- Collaborate in liaison related to data sets, data management, data visualization, and text mining.
- Determine best practices to serve former users of the Engineering and Math branch libraries.
- Be aware of accessibility factors in use of the collection.
- Hire or reassign staff to cover liaison responsibilities after retirements and resignations.
III. COLLECTION MAINTENANCE
Goal: Organize, maintain, control, preserve and secure the collection
for maximum utilization.
- Work with conservation and preservation staff to promote awareness, and identify high priority resources.
- Preserve electronic resources through archiving clauses in licenses; participation in projects through the CIC, CLOCKSS, LOCKSS and
Portico; and local initiatives to digitize selected resources.
- Improve user access to materials through streamlined cataloging, indexing
and finding tools, in SearchPlus and the OPAC.
IV. LIBRARY PROMOTION
Goal: Promote the use of the University Libraries and appropriate information
- Work with library Public Relations and Outreach staff to publicize our resources.
- Reach out to campus populations that under-use
- Work with Development to promote the library to potential donors.
V. RESOURCE SHARING
Goal: Provide maximum access to resources for our users through cooperative
- Cooperate with CIC, CRL, Lyrasis and other national consortia for efficiency
- Cooperate with state projects such as MelCat and the MCLS electronic journal
- Cooperate with the MSU College of Law Library and the Library of Michigan.
VI. REMOTE ACCESS
Goal: Make Library resources available remotely in full text.
- Acquire appropriate materials in digital formats that offer adequate license
- Support distance education needs.
- Pursue network technologies that are consistent with access
for populations with disabilities.
- Work toward digitization
of resources, and support of Open Access.
- Support campus efforts to improve network security, through programs such as two-factor authentication.
Goal: Provide an appropriate space and environment, and administrative
support, for research and study/services and activities.
- Keep Collection Development Policy statements current, including reflections of campus data management and text mining needs.
- Share information within the division through unit meetings, coordinator meetings with minutes, all-subject librarian meetings, with minutes when possible.
- Participate in searches, hiring and training for new and replacement positions, such as a social sciences librarian, an African Studies librarian, and a music librarian; and integrate new hires into library operations.
- Carry out internal library administrative procedures on time, including setting Gs&Os, conducting evaluations, and maintaing personnel records.
Goal: Maintain a diverse staff with the skills to support the Libraries'
- Hire and retain a diverse staff with appropriate skills.
- Serve under-represented populations through collections, staffing, instruction
- Address library-related social issues through professional activities.
- Manage the collection with an eye to accessibility issues.
- Take part in the second round of the ARL IRDW (Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce) campus visit.
IX. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Contribute to the development and dissemination of new knowledge.
- Support staff development programs to keep staff skills up-to-date.
- Support professional and scholarly activity by members of the Division.
Goal: Seek additional sources of funding from outside the University.
- Pursue grants and fundraising opportunities aimed at library needs, in collaboration with Anita Ezzo.
- With the our Development Officer, and manage spending from our endowments.
