Switchboard is a commercial Web-based
U. S. telephone directory, apparently based on national white and yellow
pages. At this writing, it was free.

AT&T Toll-Free 800
Directory: an interactive Web site.

Telephone book contents are available on a CD-ROM workstation
across from the IRC desk on the main level of the Main Library.

National Directory of Addresses and Telephone Numbers, in
CD-ROM, is available in the Software Library on the 4th Floor, Main Library.
Business has a paper copy with call number E154.5 .N3.

There are two copies of the National Fax Directory in the
Main Library with call number TK6710.N37: one at IRC, one in SSHR.

FaxUSA, an annual directory, is shelved at Business (call

ZIP codes
via the Web: this form browser from the United States Postal Service home
page provides ZIP+4 information if you enter an address.

The National Five-Digit ZIP Code and Post Office Directory,
in paper, is available in Business and at IRC, with call number HE6361.A315;
the Software Library has a CD-ROM version.
Business directories

Hoover's Online is an interactive Web
site with information and hot links to many corporations and other useful
sites.

Hoover's Handbook of American Business, is shelved in SSHR
and at Business with call number HF50030.H6686; it covers a smaller
list of companies.

Standard and Poor's Register, a basic directory for larger
corporations, is shelved in Business and at the SSHR Desk with call number
HG4057.A4.

The Dalton Philadelphia Metro Directory: Business/Industry,
shelved in paper in Reference (REF HF3163.P5D34), covers Philadelphia and
the surrounding region.

Dun's Regional Business Directory: Michigan Metros is available
in Business, at call number HG4057.M5D86.
Directories of non-profit enterprises

Encyclopedia of Associations, available at IRC, behind the
Desk at SSHR and at Business (call number HS17.E5), is an extensive directory
of organizations of all kinds in the U. S. Use the "Name and Keyword Index"
volume to find entries.

Encyclopedia of Associations: International Associations,
available at IRC and behind the Desk at SSHR (call number HS17.E54), is a
companion set for groups outside the United States.

World of Learning, shelved behind the Desk in SSHR (call
number AS2.W6), provides addresses and basic information about museums,
libraries, universities and learned societies world-wide.

Remember as well the "blue pages" sections of most telephone
books.
Government office directories

The Federal
Web Locator from the Villanova Center for Information Law and Policy
is one of the best assemblies of information on the Web, and covers a dizzying
array of United States federal offices. Maybe too many ... if this is
overwhelming try the next tool instead.

United States Government
Manual is somewhat simpler to use because it is less detailed: the latest
edition of this annual is posted on the Web by the National Archives and
Records Administration.

United States Government Manual is also available in
paper at IRC, behind the Desk at SSHR, and at Business: it has the call number
JK421.A3 or the Government Documents (SuDocs) number AE2.108/2:. Earlier
editions are in the Stacks.

Europa Year Book, available behind the Desk at SSHR (call
number JN1.E85), has entries for all world states (and international
organizations) in alphabetical order. Included are addresses for government
offices and many other institutions.

Washington Information Directory, shelved at IRC and behind
the Desk at SSHR (call number REF F192.3 .W3) lists offices in Washington,
D.C., including foreign embassies; look in the index to find the correct
pages.
Directories of publications

"Books in Print" is available online to members of the
Tri-College community through the library
web page. Choose Electronic Resources, then click on
FirstSearch, then scroll down to "Books in Print" and click on the
link. This is a licensed commercial database, and Internet visitors from
off-campus will not be able to use it.

Books in Print is available in paper at IRC, Science
Reference and at Business, with call number Z1215.P971. It includes a one-volume
directory of publishers.

Verzeichnis lieferbarer Buecher, the German "books in print,"
is available in the Technical Services area of the Main Library.

Whitaker's, the British "books in print," is available in
microfiche in the Acquisitions department..
