ONLINE Resources for Central Asian and Middle East Studies

Islam, Islamic Studies: Resources for Studying Islam A resource guide to the study of Islam, with extensive linking to other sites.

SESRTCIC: Statistical, Economic and Social Research Training Center for Islamic Countries
This is a searchable database of statistics from Islamic countries compiled from national statistical yearbooks of the countries (when available) and international statistical sources such as the U.N. Covers the Middle East, Central Asia, and many African and Asian countries (those with significant Muslim populations).

Iraq - The cradle of civilization at risk. Cultural heritage and historical monuments. A site created by H-Museum, part of the H-net network, that compiles information on the threats to cultural and historic landmarks in Iraq. Contains links to news articles and online research and information bulletins.

Al-Jazeera This links to the English-language version of the Al-Jazeera TV website. Once a temporary site, it is now in the process of becoming a permanent news site. Content is somewhat different from what appears on television, but transcripts of interviews on Al-Jazeera are translated and available through the Middle East news section of Lexis Nexis Academic.

Middle East Virtual Library A portal to materials on the Middle East and Islamic studies, centered at the State and University Library Saxony-Anhalt in Halle (Germany)

The Middle East Research Institute
Headquartered in Washington DC, MEMRI's primary research project is to translate Middle Eastern media sources into numerous languages, currently including English, German, and Spanish -- especially as it pertains to US policies. Somewhat controversial in its selection of material and tends toward the sensational.

Afghanistan--Land in Crisis National Geographic's page devoted to Afghanistan containing maps, news articles and other information.  While geared more toward K-12, it contains useful information for those just starting to learn about the region.

Eurasianet News, information and analysis in English about political, economic, environmental and social developments in the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Created by the Central Eurasia Project of the Open Society Institute

Central Asia-Caucasus Analyst: Events from the region and analysis. Published biweekly by the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

Afghanistan Online Contains excellent sections on politics and history of the country, including constitutions, chronology, and many articles on the topic.  This website is based in the United States

Columbia University has an excellent Middle East Studies site with a specific page for resources on Islam.  Also see its excellent page on Political Violence in the Middle East.

Maps of Afghanistan and the region, found in MSU's Map Library and electronically, courtesy of Kathleen Weesies.
